Second Singapore reader meetup

A quick competition. More details to follow…

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the readers who attended the Singapore meetup yesterday – great to see familiar faces and new ones; a shame several of you couldn’t make it, but there’s always next time.

And by the way, the collage of images/ iPhones above is something I’m going to run at all future meet ups – I’ll pick a subject, everybody finds an image to enter, puts $5 or $10 in the pot, I’ll do a critique, then the best image takes all. Think of it as an opportunity to learn something, and possibly a free lunch 🙂

See you all next time! MT

Singapore reader meetup details

Hi everybody,

Just to confirm the reader meetup tomorrow – we’ll do it at The National Museum of Singapore; looks like I’m going to be holed up there all day with various other meetings/ events.

Venue: meet at the front entrance, the National Museum of Singapore – we’ll go find a place for food/ drinks after that; Novus is quite nice from memory.
Time: 1-3pm

Feel free to bring any other friends who might be interested. Free and easy like the last one, and perhaps we’ll run an impromptu photo contest, so bring your smartphones/ tablets etc…

In case you decide to come last minute, are running late, or get lost, my phone number is +60 17 387 6700.

See you all tomorrow! MT

Singapore reader meetup this Friday – 6 July – last call!

I’ll be in Singapore this Friday, 6th July for some meetings – if you’d like to attend the reader meetup lunch, from 1-3pm – probably around the Orchard area but TBC (will definitely be somewhere in town) – please leave a comment below with your email address, and I’ll send out the details in the next day or so. Thanks and looking forward to seeing you all there! MT

POTD: Singapore reader meetup

What I thought was going to be dinner turned into a 5 hour sharing session with new friends – thank you all for coming, and I hope you had fun. We covered a bit of everything from critiques to color to gear fondling to web sharpening (three Leica M users) to our inaugural photography sweepstakes competition – I think the latter should become a tradition! I’ll definitely do the same for the KL meet up.

In hindsight, what I should have done is take a shot of your phone screens with the entered photos instead – or your cameras, perhaps – but that can be for next time!

I’ve also set up a Facebook page for the fans to informally gather around the virtual water cooler – it’s at The main reason is that whilst I can see all of you if you add me as a friend, there’s no easy way for my blog readers to find each other – especially after meet ups, for instance. This is the solution. Future updates to the blog will be posted here, too – not because I’m divorcing my personal page from the site, but because WordPress just won’t let me. Don’t forget to stop by and like the page! 🙂

Great to meet you all, and I’m looking forward to the KL meetup in a week or so. MT

POTD x3: The kind of sequence that kills cameras, and a quick reminder

The kind of sequence that kills a camera: or, advancing waves at 14mm. Olympus E-PM1 Pen Mini, 14-42 kit lens.

Let’s just say there was a reason I was using this and not, say, an M9. Also, I was moving out of the way rather quickly!

I’ve been experimenting with sequences/ sets a bit lately; it’s something that I thought might be interesting to build off the contact sheet idea – any not make the contact sheet and thinking process part of the desired end output? But then I suppose it would require us to think about the individual frames in the context of their own contact sheet, which would be rather meta and confusing…or perhaps the right way to approach this would be thinking of the sequence in itself, much like a video clip – except we just capture key frames. I have a sneaky feeling that pursuing this path of development will eventually lead me back into experimenting with cinematography again (which will be the subject of a future article).

A quick reminder: My Singapore reader meet up will happen tonight, at 7pm, outside Ion Orchard near the red floor installation and the ‘bubble’ MRT entrance. You’ll find me because of the M9-P hanging around my neck, and I’ll be wearing a red t-shirt. (For some odd inexplicable reason, this is beginning to feel like a blind internet date. Oh well, at least we know we all have one thing in common!) We’ll wander around from there and find something to eat. Looking forward to meeting you all! MT
