Odds and ends

I just wanted to say that I’ve been seriously impressed by the caliber of photos submitted to our reader portfolio group on Flickr – there is some absolutely stunning work in there, so well done! Please keep up the good work everybody, and keep the contributions coming. If you haven’t already checked out the pool, I highly recommend a look – and with the objective of this site and its various tentacles being learning, please feel free to leave constructive comments and criticism on the images, too.

Secondly, my favorite cheap CSC appears to be on sale at Amazon – the Olympus E-PM1 Pen Mini with 14-42 kit lens is now US$399 in black and silver, as opposed to US$499 for the other colors. Click here for black and here for silver**.

Finally, a gentle reminder to enter the competition – there are plenty of great photos in the reader flickr pool that would qualify, but they’re not entered! (hint hint.)

**As usual, ordering via these referral links doesn’t cost you any more, but it does help support the site as Amazon sends a portion of your purchase back to me.

Good news and bad news

Good news #1: There’s a firmware update available for the OM-D that’s supposed to correct the sleep lockup problem.

Good news #2: It appears that there are huge discounts on the Pansonic GX1, available here from Amazon in kit form for $492 (with the 14-42) and body only for $395. That’s cheaper than a Pen Mini in most parts of the world…and as much as I like the Pen Mini, the GX1 is a much more full-featured camera – and a no-brainer at this price.

Bad news: 43rumors.com has jacked my image without permission to use as their post centerpiece, which is how I found out about the firmware update. You can see the original here. Please do me a favor and leave a comment of support under my comment on their fb page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/43rumors/154271467964575) or on the original post. Thanks! MT

Second Singapore reader meetup

_8017355 copy
A quick competition. More details to follow…

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the readers who attended the Singapore meetup yesterday – great to see familiar faces and new ones; a shame several of you couldn’t make it, but there’s always next time.

And by the way, the collage of images/ iPhones above is something I’m going to run at all future meet ups – I’ll pick a subject, everybody finds an image to enter, puts $5 or $10 in the pot, I’ll do a critique, then the best image takes all. Think of it as an opportunity to learn something, and possibly a free lunch 🙂

See you all next time! MT

Quick poll: Photoshop workflow video tutorial

I’ve had a number of emails about my Photoshop workflow already, but they’re difficult to answer because a lot of this stuff is demonstration-based. I could make a video, but that’s very time consuming and means I can’t do other stuff. However, for a tutorial of this sort to be  useful and meaningful, it will have to be properly recorded and edited, supplied in HD on DVD, and will take some time to do. The tradeoff is always blogging vs commercial work – realistically it’ll probably cost a little something in order to justify producing.

So, before I go off and spend a couple of days producing one – I’d like to get an idea of how you all feel about it via the two quick questions below. Thanks! MT

Singapore reader meetup details

Hi everybody,

Just to confirm the reader meetup tomorrow – we’ll do it at The National Museum of Singapore; looks like I’m going to be holed up there all day with various other meetings/ events.

Venue: meet at the front entrance, the National Museum of Singapore – we’ll go find a place for food/ drinks after that; Novus is quite nice from memory.
Time: 1-3pm

Feel free to bring any other friends who might be interested. Free and easy like the last one, and perhaps we’ll run an impromptu photo contest, so bring your smartphones/ tablets etc…

In case you decide to come last minute, are running late, or get lost, my phone number is +60 17 387 6700.

See you all tomorrow! MT

Good news: there’s an official Nikon D800/D800E focusing fix!

Was told by NPS this morning that an internal fix for the D800/ D800E asymmetric focusing issue has been issued. I’ll be sending my cameras in next week after a job; apparently it’s both hardware and software calibration. Fingers crossed…

Celebrating another milestone – 500,000 visitors!

I’ve been up and running for just under four months now – some time during the early hours of this morning saw the half-millionth visitor to my site.

I just wanted to say thank you all for your support! Please continue to help keep things growing by sharing this site with your friends! MT

Making space in the camera cupboard…sale time!

I seem to have reverted back to my natural 28/85mm habitat, and various projects are complete, which means that a few things need to go:

1. Mint condition Leica 35/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH FLE (latest version with the screw on square hood, 6 bit coded). Glass is perfect and focusing is buttery smooth. I’m just not a 35mm person; I’ve since reverted to my natural 28mm habitat.
US$5500 net to me via wire or 3% for paypal. Shipping via courier only, I’m guessing US$150 should cover it anywhere in the world.

3. Visoflex III, good condition (some paint loss on housing, visible in photos). Mirror alignment has been adjusted so focus in the finder matches the sensor plane of the M9 perfectly. Fits M8/M9.
US$230 plus shipping.

Thanks! MT
