Bespoke Queenstown Landscape Workshop, 21-24 April 2016

Time for something different. This April, I’m offering more than a workshop: an intensive experience to raise your photography to the next level. The focus will be on landscape, in and around Queenstown, New Zealand. We (I) will be driving a lot, bringing you to locations I discovered on my last trip to both explore and develop your own work. But here’s the kicker: the workshop will limited to just three participants, and is inclusive of 4*+ accommodation and ground transport costs. It’s something I’ve been asked for in the past, but didn’t make much sense unless going to a location where driving/ground transport is necessary and we have much range to cover.

We’ll be based in Queenstown but driving to new locations for each of the four days. It is one of, if not the highest yield landscape location I’ve ever been to.

Here’s the itinerary: it’s a skeleton for now, and once attendees confirm, we’ll shape it more thoroughly around individual needs.

20th April: Arrive Queenstown by afternoon; evening briefing, portfolio review and group dinner
21st-23rd: Location shoots: expect to be out from dawn til past dusk. I plan to cover not just golden hour and dawn locations, but also finding midday opportunities, workflow, and astrophotography (if weather permits). At each location, we’ll spend some time observing, making a shot list, optimising execution and exploring both style and creative experimentation. We’ll also have light daily review and postprocessing sessions.
24th: Last morning session; afternoon of critiques and postprocessing; closing dinner
25th: Group departure

Core locations will be around the Arrowtown Delta, Wanaka/ Lake Hawea, Kawarau Gorge, Skipper’s Canyon (again, depends on weather and road conditions) the Glenorchy delta and Fjordland.

We will be going in what I hope is the middle of the autumn color season – it’s been getting a bit later each year, so mid-late April appears to be the best bet. For an idea of what’s possible during winter – here are additional images I shot a couple of years back. In addition, all images in this post were shot around the core locations.

The price is US$5,000 per person, inclusive of 4/5* accommodation from 20-25th April (5 nights) and ground transport on arrival in Queenstown. Please click here to send me an email to book. Thank you! MT

Terms and conditions:
A minimum of two participants is required to make this a go. Payment is required in full on confirmation via bank wire. Due to the very small group and necessity for me to make all ground arrangements and payments in advance, refunds are regrettably not possible.

  1. Art Hackett says:

The south island is amazing, frequently like a cgi movie with weird colours, shapes and combinations of flora and landscapes not seen anywhere.

Looking forward to seeing your interpretations; especially after seeing your posted samples.

  2. I just discovered your blog and find it extremely inspiring (especially for me as a photography novice and multimedia storyteller). Can’t wait to see more of your stuff!

  3. beautiful pics, I’m a photography novice myself but this is defiantly something to aspire to. would love if you have a second to check out my stuff on my blog.

    have a great day;0

  4. Are you alredy shooting with FF Pentax? 🙂 The whole world is waiting…

  5. Kenny Younger says:

This would be a dream trip for me. One day… 🙂

  6. Envy! I wish I wasn’t hosting a wine symposium those same dates. Awesome sounding workshop, and such a small group.

  7. lensaddiction says:

The photography society of NZ is having their annual conference on those dates just FYI. There will be
Loads of togs in the area!

  8. Beautiful images….it is stunning landscape country. Glenorchy and the Routburn have much to offer!

  9. I’m very interested Ming. Can you please confirm if this is 4 or 5 nights accommodation and what class of accommodation you intend.

    Cheers

    Jono

  10. Aurélien says:

    Wonderful shots !

  11. Wow, Ming. Very, very tempting. It’s expensive but I can already see how enlightening it could be. Probably doesn’t work to shoot just film. 🙂

    • Actually, a good chunk of it is ground logistics and accommodation (included this time, because we are staying in different places and it make sense for one person to handle all reservations) – the tuition part is the same as the normal masterclasses 🙂

As for film: probably not since developing it will be tricky, however it is theoretically possible to bring daylight tanks and chemical and work with B&W film…
