New: MT’s Weekly PS Workflow Classroom

PS weekly review

It’s time to take postprocessing further in the new year.

Given the popularity of the photoshop and postprocessing videos, and the continual feedback for more of the same – I’ve decided to try an experiment for 2016. Every week, with the first instalment available on 3 Jan 2016, I’ll be putting out a new video. The concept is simple: it’s a classroom where submitted images are critiqued and postprocessed and subscriber questions answered. This is the closest I can get to a providing a consistent learning environment for a large audience.

  • Subscribers can submit images of their own; I will try to critique all of them
  • We select the most interesting to post process in ACR/photoshop using workflow II, with a discussion of the rationale behind it
  • Any subscriber questions are answered
  • In addition, I postprocess images of my own so you can see the complete workflow from capture and conception to completion – to see how the complete ‘idea’ comes together (i.e. capture with previsualized output)

Each weekly video will run for ~1h15min.

Announcing the Lisbon Masterclass, 9-14 March 2016

From the Venice Masterclass

Lisbon is a new destination for me, which is why there’s no header image from there. This means unlike the previous Masterclasses, I’m also going in blind with no experience. I will experience the same visual overload as you, and you will in turn have the benefit of seeing how I work in a completely unfamiliar environment. Note that I am also reducing the number of workshops this year due to my commercial schedule – one per quarter is the aim. Please read on to book and for more information. Places will go quite quickly as the class composition is usually 30-50% returning participants.

Tokyo Masterclass: student works

Screen Shot 2015-11-22 at 12.50.42 PM

Today’s presentation comprises photographs from Tokyo, but they’re not mine: instead, with permission from the photographers, I’m proud to present a curated set of work from my students’ portfolios at the end of the week. I leave the individuals responsible to claim credit or responsibility…but I think you’ll agree that it’s both a very diverse and accomplished set! :) MT

Name links are to portfolios or flickr where applicable.

Last spot for the Tokyo Masterclass from 9-14 November

Shinjuku, Tokyo: best suited to cinematic, urban, architecture and street; (more examples of what you might capture are here, here and here) think this is probably the best season to visit Tokyo – the trees are bright orange, the light is angled, and you’ve missed the grey winters, the cherry-blossom chasing hoardes, and the typhoons of summer.

Due to a last minute cancellation, I have one place left for the Tokyo Masterclass from 9-14 November, with some special incentives. More details after the break.

One place available for The Email School of Photography

_M8_L1024258bw copy
A very old image from 2009 at the Bodleian Library of my alma mater.

My Email School of Photography is a personally tailored correspondence program to assist you with improving your image making skills, at your own pace, no matter what your skill level. I’ve had approximately 200 students in total and about 50 who are still currently at various stages of completion. A lot of my students go on to join me for workshops or Masterclasses, and vice versa – a workshop is a great way to accelerate what you’ve learned in the Email School, and the Email School is a great way to continue the learning post-workshop especially for topics that might require a bit more contemplation and iteration.

Thanks to a couple of coincidences of timing (more graduating assignment submissions than people on the waiting list and fast completers) I have one spot available for the Email School of Photography open now – details of the program follow after the jump. I’ve never advertised this mentoring program much simply because I rarely have any free slots to offer!

It’s my birthday, so I’m giving you all a little gift…

Ming Thein’s How To See Ep. 5: Havana from Ming Thein on Vimeo.

I’m currently finishing off some retouching from my last assignment before preparing for the Hanoi Cinematic Masterclass with Zeiss, but once again, as curiously happens the same time every year…it’s my birthday so I’d like to celebrate by giving you all a little gift – a thank you for your support over the last couple of years. For the next week, using the voucher code ‘MING2015’ gets you $30 off any video or bundle on the teaching store for purchases over $100. There’s no limit on the number of vouchers per person – use as many as you like in combination with whichever videos you wish – but the total number of vouchers is limited. First-come, first-served and valid for one week until 23.59 KL time (GMT+8) on the 25th of July 2014 – or the vouchers run out, whichever comes first. So if there are any videos you’ve been curious about, or need to complete your set, now’s the time :)

And as a gentle reminder, there are some places left for the Chicago workshops in September/October – won’t last for long though, I’m sure!

26 July: the week is now up, thank you all for your support! MT

Chicago and Tokyo Masterclasses open for booking

_7501487 copy
Shibuya, Tokyo:  best suited to cinematic, urban, architecture and street; (more examples of what you might capture are here, here and here) think this is probably the best season to visit Tokyo – the trees are bright orange, the light is angled, and you’ve missed the grey winters, the cherry-blossom chasing hoardes, and the typhoons of summer. Images like Lone Tree were made around this time of year. It’s a little tricky to time the autumn leaves precisely, but generally +/- a week or two is fine. Please note that Tokyo will be a little more guided  location-wise than Chicago simply for ease of logistics and because of the language.

I’m pleased to announce two more Masterclasses for 2015, and a new Portfolio Review format – these will probably be the last two for the year, and in two of my favourite and most photographically rich cities:

Chicago and Tokyo!
